Located along the shoreline of Lake Michigan is Chicago's number one tourist attraction, the Navy Pier. Built in 1916 at a cost of $4.5 million, the Navy Pier serves as a mixed-purpose municipal port to service the cargo industry, lake freighters, and warehouses, while offering a cool place for public gathering and entertainment. Today, the Navy Pier is home to sightseeing tours from companies such as Seadog Ventures, Shoreline Sighteseeing Cruises and Water Taxi Service, and the Tall Ship Windy. The Navy Pier also features Pier Park, a large outdoor park which includes special rides such as the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel, a musical carousel, the Light Tower Ride, and Wave Swinger. Other attractions at the park are an 18-hole miniature golf course and token-operated remote-control boats. In addition to Pier Park, the Navy Pier also hosts fairs and expositions throughout the year, such as the popular Strictly Sail boat show, Chicago Air and Water Show, Chicago Flower and Garden Show, and Winter Wonderfest. Also part of the Navy Pier is the Children's Museum, Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows, and an IMAX theater.
